The reality of equipment efficiency and effectiveness

In the manufacturing industry, one of the most important assets is machinery and equipment, since companies invest in the purchase of them in order to produce a product with the best possible effectiveness so that it gives them a return on investment and returns as a business, if it were not FOR this, no one would invest TO LOSE.

Well, it is very interesting, as in most manufacturing companies, especially small and medium-sized ones, the efficiency is measured by dividing the real production by the scheduled production and measuring with it, a very simple example program 1000 pieces, real production 900 pieces, then the efficiency is (900/100)*100= 90%, and 90% is a good number, however, the time that the machine does not operate is not considered, the "uptime" of the machine is measured separatelyuina, the quality index is measured separately and the operator's efficiency is measured separately, then we can have a "scorecard" that tells us that we are running well, for example:

However, the reality is that the OVERALL EFFECTIVENESS OF THE EQUIPMENT (EGE), also known as OEE, is not measured, in which it must be considered that equipment that was purchased and installed is available 24 hours a day and 365 or 366 days a year and therefore its use must be maximized to generate production, in quantity, in a timely manner, the best possible quality and at the lowest possible cost and this can be obtained by measuring and improving the EGE every day and so on, for example, Planned stoppage, stoppage to eat, preventive maintenance, rest days technical stoppages, etc.are elements where the equipment will be idle without producing, by the same administration.

This is a clear example of how EGE can be understood

Thus we can clearly observe how the effective time in which the Equipment is producing good parts is very reduced, and it is for this reason that many manufacturing companies have great opportunities for improvement.

It is important to note that there are several formulas for the calculation but the most important thing is to understand that the TRUE PERFORMANCE INDICATOR IS THE OVERALL EFFECTIVENESS OF THE TEAM (EGE).
